Remote Teaching Resources for TAs
UC Davis offers a variety of resources to support teaching assistants and associate instructors. Whether you're starting out as a new TA, honing your skillset after multiple teaching experiences, or looking to connect with other graduate instructors, there are resources and programs available to meet your needs.
The TA's Guide to Effective Teaching
The TA's Guide to Effective Teaching at UC Davis is a comprehensive guide which includes teaching strategies, advice from graduate instructors, and frequently asked questions. The guide covers a wide range of topics, including planning the first day of class, checking for student understanding, engaging students, and creating an inclusive classroom environment. It also includes tips and strategies for teaching online.
Web Resources
The Keep Teaching website includes two guides specifically for TAs, Active Learning Online for TAs and Online Equity and Inclusion for TAs. However, the Keep Teaching website was designed for instructors from a variety of disciplines with varying levels of online teaching experience, so most of the strategies throughout the site can be adapted for your particular teaching context and role(s). The Just-in-Time Teaching (JITT) resources, available through the Center for Educational Effectiveness, also include a wide range of teaching strategies that can be applied to face-to-face, remote, and hybrid teaching contexts.
Consultations
The Center for Educational Effectiveness (CEE) offers a variety of consultations for graduate and postdoc instructors, which are provided by graduate students who are trained as TA Consultants (TACs). Consultants can support you in many ways, including:
- Helping you design or redesign an assignment for the remote teaching environment
- Facilitating a mid-quarter student feedback survey
- Observing you teach and providing feedback
- Providing feedback on your teaching statement or diversity statement for the academic job market
- Answer questions, problem solving, and connecting you to teaching resources

Graduate Teaching Community
CEE's Graduate Teaching Community is a collaborative, interdisciplinary group of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars who come together on a weekly basis to explore effective teaching practices. All are welcome to join the conversation, whether you are currently teaching or not.
